Developing of education app to make it more accessible

Zimmerman’s research suggests that the application of self-regulatory processes, such as goal setting, strategic planning, and self-monitoring, significantly influences the effectiveness of learning. This implies that those who effectively apply self-regulatory processes tend to achieve higher in their learning tasks.

This app is tailored to the modern learning style of elementary school students. It addresses issues like loss of concentration and network disruptions that hinder studying and completing assignments online.

The app features a character named 'Pengii,' who helps students engage with quiz assignments even offline, making learning enjoyable while also enhancing their self-regulation skills.

We want to...

Change the growing landscape of online homework to make it more accessible to students who do not have consistent access to Wifi, whilst also helping students with their self-regulation skills.

Key Features

Homework Uploading

Allows teachers to customize their questions with a variety of different question types, and upload it to the platform for their students to complete

Download-Friendly

Students have the option to download their assignments while they have wifi (before they leave school, or at the library) and complete their assignments without connectivity. They can also download worksheets and other helpful material to help them complete these assignments.

Team Scoreboard

To incentivize students through friendly competition, students will get an overall score of their homework completion (taking into account factors like teamwork and accuracy), which are displayed within their team. This score has no bearing on their homework grade.

Helper Mascot

With WiFi, students can access the helpful mascot, who can provide them help, help them control the timer, among other things.

Self-Initiated Timer

To help with self-regulation, students can control a timer that restricts their usage of other applications while they’re doing homework. They can freely choose to turn it off or on, but it affects their score

Why the process was necessary: It helps me visualize interactions from the user’s perspective, giving me a deeper understand of his needs and pain points.

End - Learning

  • To a large portion of students, homework isn’t an enjoyable activity, and they’ll perceive any after-school assignments, both on paper and online, as obstacles before they can have fun or sources of frustration and stress.

  • Despite not liking the process of doing homework, students, particularly high-achieving ones, like the validation of good marks and recommendations to improve - furthering their academic skills.

  • Students tend to procrastinate on their work when they are at home, and especially in the presence of technology. It gives them access to entertaining content that provides instant dopamine, such as videos and mobile games.

  • Students’ relationships with homework tend to be negative, but in the long run, will help them develop study habits and self-regulation skills that will help them in their future. How can we facilitate the development of these skills in the age of technology?

How we address wifi + Accessibliity

Study Buddy effectively addresses Wi-Fi and accessibility challenges with its offline mode and cloud synchronization feature. This innovative approach allows students to complete assignments without an internet connection, ensuring uninterrupted studying. When internet access is restored, Study Buddy seamlessly syncs completed assignments to the cloud, enabling students to pick up where they left off. This enhances accessibility to learning resources, mitigating the impact of limited or unreliable Wifi on the study experience.

Furthermore, Study Buddy is mobile-friendly, offering a user-friendly interface compatible with iOS and Android devices. This design ensures that students with smartphones can easily access and complete their homework, providing flexibility and convenience in their study routine.

How we help develop Self Regulation Skills

StudyBuddy plays a pivotal role in the development of self-regulation skills by fostering a proactive, student-centered approach to homework & learning. As students increasingly take charge of their academic responsibilities, the app provides tools and features that help transform their mental abilities into practical skills. Through StudyBuddy, students can organize assignments, set goals, manage their time effectively, and balance academic tasks with personal interests.

This student-driven approach to homework and  learning aligns with the concept of self-regulation, where students view learning as an active, self-directed endeavor rather than a passive reaction to teaching, ultimately empowering them to thrive in their educational journey.

Problems

Learning about and addressing the issues that arose for students during the pandemic presented a bit of a challenge. The schooling environment changed drastically, so we needed to think of ways to adapt and make the process easier for our users.

Challenge

Integrating the features that we wanted to include in a cohesive and intuitive way that makes use practical and fun

Summary

I could figure out how to integrate the features and our team had strong communication.

To develop the application individually, I need to think about the user’s side due to the mass of information which we collected. Therefore, the character is added as AI and talks to students on any topic which can even support their feelings.
